While the newspapers trumpeted the storm's demise, people used humor to show they had not been defeated by the blizzard. A prankster placed a placard on a particularly huge drift near New York City's Madison Square that read: THIS SNOW IS ABSOLUTELY FREE! PLEASE TAKE A SAMPLE! Several blocks away, a shopkeeper, frustrated that he could not find anyone to shovel his snow, left this sign outside his place of buisness: IMPORTANT! EXPENSIVE DIAMOND RING LOST UNDER THIS SNOW DRIFT! FINDERS KEEPERS! START DIGGING! YOU MAY BE THE LUCKY WINNER!
